Replacement of Main Street Bridge over the Podunk River

For your information the replacement of the Main Street Bridge over the Podunk River is scheduled to begin the week of February 21, 2022.  This work includes removing the existing old bridge and abutments; and constructing new abutments, wingwalls, concrete bridge beams, a new deck and parapet walls, repaving the road over the new bridge and new guiderails.  This project will be done by Dayton Construction.

Main Street will be closed at the bridge for demolition of the existing bridge beginning on or about February 21, 2022.  This road is expected to remain closed at the bridge until the end of September 2022 when this project is to be completed.  Access will be maintained to all properties along this road during construction.  A detour around the bridge work area on Main Street will be established using Chapel Road to Route 5 to Burnham Street to King Street and Brook Street.   The CT DOT will have another contractor working on the large culverts that carry the Podunk River under King Street and I-291 and they will use the same detour around their work area on King Street.   Motorists are advised to drive slowly and use caution in this area during construction.

I apologize for the inconvenience this project may cause and thank you for your patience while this bridge is replaced.  The existing bridge was originally constructed in 1907 and was last reconstructed in 1981.   The intention is for this new bridge to last for another 50-100 years.
