The South Windsor Police Department is pleased to announce the start of our internship program. The internship program allows college students an opportunity to personally evaluate the profession of law enforcement and shadow and learn from the various units and assignments that our department has to offer, including, but not limited to: the traffic unit, criminal investigations unit, communications, community outreach, training, honor guard, animal control, school resource officers, records, canine, and patrol.  The Student Intern Liaison, assigned to the Operations Division, is responsible for the management of the internship program including the selection process and coordination of the student’s schedules.

Intern Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates for participation as an intern must:

  • Be a student enrolled in a cooperative work experience program at an accredited college or university as a junior, senior, or graduate student in a criminal justice or closely related major/program.
  • Submit most up to date transcripts demonstrating that they are successful students in good standing within their chosen field of study.
  • Be willing to submit to a background investigation, including a fingerprint based criminal history check with no felony convictions.
  • Must display good moral character and have strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Be able to work a flexible and rotating schedule.
  • Be a United States citizen or be legally present in the United States

Application Process

Candidates interested in the internship program must submit the following:

  • A resume and cover letter.
  • A copy of a government issued identification card (driver’s license, passport, etc.).
  • A copy of the student's transcript including the most recent semester/trimester completed.
  • A letter of recommendation from the College/University program coordinator, advisor, professor or teacher.
  • A memorandum describing the goals the intern has for participating in the program.
  • All documents must be fully completed and submitted to the department’s Student Intern Liaison by the application dates below.
  • Complete an interview with the liaison and one or two other department members to assist in determining suitability for the program.

Final selection of student interns will be made by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.

The dates for submitting internship applications each semester are as follows:

  • Spring Semester: Application must be received by November 15th.
  • Summer Semester: Application must be received by April 1st.
  • Fall Semester: Application must be received by August 15th.

 

After the applications are received, and if accepted, students will be tentatively scheduled pending a background investigation and completion of a signed liability waiver, confidentiality agreement, and an authorization of release of personal information form. Students should remain in contact with their college internship coordinator and should not report to the police department until they receive confirmation regarding the status of their background investigations.
