Records Management
The department employs two records specialists who are responsible for the review, filing and dissemination of police record information. They are responsible for maintaining the files of home and business alarm systems and the enforcement of the Town’s alarm ordinance. They organize and prepare records for public dissemination, superior court and juvenile court. They are responsible for maintaining South Windsor’s criminal history database.
Freedom of Information (FOI)
The South Windsor Police Department is committed to being as transparent as possible in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act. Please note that our agency receives many requests for records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), over 200 were received in 2023. Each requested record must be individually reviewed and processed by department staff. Many records require redaction before they can be released under FOIA. This process can be extremely time consuming, and completion may require several months. Your patience is both requested and appreciated. Since expansive records requests require significant time to fulfill, it is helpful if your request is specifically articulated and narrow to expedite responses and to get the specific information you are looking for. Please contact us with any questions or concerns. There is a quick link located on this screen with a fillable request form that you can use to make a records request. Please note the following:
Complete your record requests and hand deliver, mail, fax, or e-mail to pdrecord@southwindsor-ct.gov. (See form on this page).
- All records requests are subject to applicable State and Federal law.
- Paper copies cost $0.50 per printed side.
- Electronic files that are delivered on physical media cost $5.00 per media device.
- Payment methods accepted: cash or check
- Requests for mailed copies must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and pre-payment.
- Accident reports are available online at: www.crashdocs.org.
- Request specificity may allow for a faster response as expansive requests can take longer to fulfill.
- Expect a lead time of several weeks, longer if video or audio recordings must be reviewed.
- Please note that current law does not require the department to create a document, perform research, or answer questions. Our agency is required by law to release existing non-exempt public records.
