Home Fire Preparedness Campaign

South Windsor to participate in American Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign

The Town of South Windsor and The South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department are partnering with the American Red Cross to prevent serious injury or deaths caused by residential fires.  It is estimated that someone dies in a fire 7 times each day and someone is injured by fire every 45 minutes.   These injuries can often be prevented through prevention efforts, such as having a working smoke detector.
The American Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign will provide families with free smoke alarms, fire prevention tools, and information.  The campaign aims to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries in the United States by 25 percent over the next 5 years.  The goal is to visit over 1.6 million homes to install smoke alarms, replace smoke alarm batteries, complete a home safety checklist and help residents develop a disaster plan.
Nearly 5 million homes in the U. S. don’t have smoke alarms and 60 percent of home fire deaths occur in homes without a working smoke alarm.
The local campaign will kickoff on September 18th at 8:00 a.m. at Fire Headquarters (1175 Ellington Road).   Members of the Fire Department, Fire Marshal Office, Office of Emergency Management and South Windsor Police Department will be on hand to answer questions as we pledge to make our community an even safer one.

All demonstrations and installations will be performed by American Red Cross trained volunteers and/or licensed/insured professionals. Residents wishing to schedule a free visit can register at https://www.redcross.org/ct/schedule-a-visit or call 1-877-287-3327 and choose option “1”.
