Eversource Inspection of Transmission Equipment in South Windsor

Eversource is required to inspect its transmission equipment in order to maintain the reliability of the electric grid.  Two types of inspection work will be taking place to evaluate the condition of the structures and wires.  Eversource has begun utilizing a more innovative technology to accomplish this regulatory requirement - we will be utilizing drones. The drones are approximately 2 feet across, equipped with a camera, and manned by drone operators on the ground within the right of way. The use of drones:

  • Saves customers money by being a more cost effective method of inspection than helicopters or airplanes.
  • Allows for a better quality inspection especially in those areas that are difficult to access such as environmentally sensitive areas.

In addition to the drone inspections, foot patrols will be inspecting structure bases and foundations.  In some instances, they may have to hand excavate around the base of the structures.  The excavated areas will be filled in before moving on to the next structure.

This work is expected to begin within the next couple of weeks and will be completed by the end of the year.  Work hours will be Monday through Saturday 7 am to 7 pm.

Eversource is notifying property owners of the upcoming work by sending letters. The letter provides a 1-800 number as well as an email address for people to use if they would like additional information.

In the Town of South Windsor, the inspections will be taking place along the right of way near the area from the Windsor town line to Main St., Rt. 5, Ellington Rd., Rt. 291, and Long Hill Rd. to the Manchester town line.
