Heritage Day September 30 by South Windsor Historical Society

The fun-filled Heritage Day, a celebration of town and colonial history and community will be staged again on Saturday September 30 by the South Windsor Historical Society. The event, in its 15th year will be held from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. at the Birden Field at the north end of Main Street. Admission and parking is free but donations are welcomed. One of the great attractions is the bake sale of home goods, cakes, breads, pies and cookies, including offerings for children to buy, cookies, brownies and such.

Other attractions include:

  • Historic wagon rides up Main Street sponsored by the Wood Memorial Library and Museum. Docents will be providing history of the houses along the way.
  • The historic Governors Horse Guard will have demonstrations and offer pony rides
  • Colonial crafts by The Society of the 17th Century (potter, lace-maker, spinner, candle maker, basket maker)
  • Entertainment: The Grass Routes Bluegrass Band, South Windsor Community Chorus, and The Sweetest Key a cappella singers.
  • Historical displays include Native American skills, a 1/3 model of the the Bissell Ferry.
  • Also booths of the First Congregational Church, Wapping Community Church, the South Windsor Historical Society, famous people from South Windsor, and more.
  • Crafts and Games for Kids – Colonial style! Pumpkin Painting, toy making and Photo Ops.
  • Antique cars and motorcycles.
  • South Windsor Community Organizations: Down to Earth Garden Club, Invasive
  • Plants Working Group, American Legion Post 133, Open Space Commission, Walk & Wheel Ways, and Mazolu Animal Sanctuary.
  • Food is also at the event: Scatz Holy Smokes BBQ will have breakfast sandwiches and luncheon items.
  • The Square Peg Pizza will offer breakfast pizza and a variety of lunch pizzas throughout the day.
