The South Windsor Police Department is a proactive and progressive law enforcement agency with a focus on community policing and problem solving. Eligible applicants must have:

  1. a high school diploma or its equivalent, with a college degree preferred;
  2. possess a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one by the time of appointment;
  3. a good driving history;
  4. be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment;
  5. have no felony convictions or criminal record.  

The hiring of a police officer is a multiple phase process and generally includes the following steps:
1. Application
2. Written Exam
3. Physical Assessment (CHIP)
4. Oral Interview Panel
5. Personal History Questionnaire
6. Polygraph Exam 
7. Psychological Evaluation
8. Background Investigation
9. Physical Exam, Drug Screen, Cardiac Stress Test
10. Interview with Chief of Police

Note: Grooming Standards- Tattoos & Piercings:
The South Windsor Police Department does not permit facial piercings to be worn on duty and only female officers are permitted to wear 1 pair of small stud type earrings while on duty. 

Tattoos are now permitted provided they are not offensive in nature. However tattoos on the hands, face and neck that would show in uniform are not permitted (excluding a normal sized wedding ring tattoo on ring finger).

The Position
Dispatchers work a 40 hour work week with varying days off.  Please note that the eight dispatchers bid 14 week shift schedules by seniority. Shift assignments consist of Day, Evening, Midnight or Rotating.  The Rotating shift covers days off for the other dispatchers, therefore they work 2 day shifts, 2 evening shifts and 1 or 2 midnight shifts each week.   As a vital public safety position, it is required that we have minimum staffing of 2 dispatchers on duty, 24 hours a day, every day. 

The dispatch center is adjacent to the lobby and dispatcher handle all radio calls, 911 calls, routine calls and walk-in complaints.  They dispatch and maintain computerized records for Police, Fire and Medical incidents.  As the only department staffed 24 hours a day in South Windsor, our dispatchers facilitate communications among all town agencies after hours, including Pollution Control, Health Inspectors, Building Inspectors, Town Highway, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:  Eligible applicants must be a United States citizen, possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, have vision correctable to 20/20, possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license or the ability to obtain one by the time of appointment, have a good driving history and have no criminal record.  Applicants must possess normal hearing and speech and be able to follow written and oral instructions, and perform tasks using common sense and good judgment to make decisions in routine and emergency situations.  Successful candidates should have excellent communication skills and a high level of proficiency with computers and the ability to multi-task.

Selection Process:  Applicants must pass a battery of tests including written and audio simulation tests, an oral board interview, background investigation, psychological exam, and chief’s interview.  Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with a progressive, community oriented police agency.  South Windsor offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits. 

Compensation:  Dispatcher salaries range from $60,776 to $75,160 and employees receive health insurance, paid holidays and paid vacation time, as well as receiving town contributions to a 401(a) defined contribution retirement plan.
