Images of America South Windsor Book Cover by Claire Lobdell for Wood Memorial Library and Museum

The Wood Memorial Library & Museum is excited to announce the publication of its new history book, Images of America: South Windsor. Written by author and archivist Claire Lobdell, the book takes readers on a journey through the past with over 200 archival photographs tracing the history of the town of South Windsor and its colorful inhabitants.

“I think it will appeal to a really wide cross-section of people. You can flip through the book and enjoy the photos, if that’s all someone wants,” says Lobdell, “but there’s also enough “history” in this history book that if you read it through from cover-to-cover, you’ll come away with a good understanding of South Windsor from about 1600 to now.”

Drawing from 4000 plus archival photographs and over 100 oral histories, Lobdell leads the reader across the Connecticut River, through tobacco fields and family farms, down Main Street, Sullivan Avenue and Long Hill Road and into one room schoolhouses, churches and social clubs. This meticulously researched book covers everything from fires and floods, to fairs and parades. Local basketball games and swimming holes are included, even Santa Claus is given a nod.

“For people whose interest is really piqued by the book, they can always go to Wood Library to find out more. There are quotes from oral histories throughout the book and people can read the full transcripts of those at Wood. A few of the transcripts are available online at our website, and our archives database is also searchable online,” says Lobdell.
