Eli Terry Safe Routes to School Pedestrian Safety Improvements

The Town of South Windsor has a proposed project for safety improvements on the campus and in the vicinity of the Eli Terry Elementary School. The proposed project is in the final design stage and plans have been modified to coordinate with the site plan for the new school which is currently in design. This project has been recommended for construction under the Safe Routes to School program administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The Town of South Windsor’s consultant Milone and MacBroom is designing this project. The proposed project includes sidewalks, pathways, handicap ramps and signage which will improve the safety for children walking and bicycling to school. Plans are available for review in the Engineering Department at the Town Hall. The public is invited to review these plans and provide input as it is the Town’s and the State’s policy to keep persons informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns to assist in the project’s development. Comments from the public will be accepted until August 21, 2018. Based on a preliminary assessment, the construction costs will be approximately $445,000. The Federal Highway Administration will provide 100% of the construction costs up to a capped value of approximately $470,000. The Town will be responsible for any costs above the cap. Anyone interested in obtaining further information or providing input may do so by contacting Michele Lipe, Town Planner at 860-644-2511 Ext. 252, or Joe Perna, Project Engineer at Ext. 240.
